Raw Ingredients in Cookie Dough

This edible cookie dough is super easy to make, and since there’s no baking needed it comes together quickly. The only thing that can take a little extra time is if you decide to heat treat the flour before using.

Now I’m not going to get into a lot of detail here, but I want you to know a little bit so you can decide what works best for you. Most people think that it’s just the raw eggs in cookie dough that make it unsafe to eat, but the truth is that flour is also a raw ingredient and can carry bacteria. Yuck, right? We don’t usually have to think about this because baking cookie dough kills any bacteria in the raw ingredients.

This funfetti edible cookie dough does not contain eggs, so you just have to decide if you want to heat proof the flour before making. The FDC actually advises not to heat treat flour at home because it’s not effective.

I personally do not heat proof the flour, but that is my own personal choice. I’ve tried heat proofing flour before and it wasn’t for me. But if I’m sharing this funfetti edible cookie dough with others I would go ahead and do it just to be safe. It’s super easy and you can learn more about it in my article about heat treating flour.

Step by Step Process with Photos

The nice thing about edible cookie dough is that it comes together quickly, so you can satisfy your craving in a matter of minutes. And there are no special ingredients needed for this edible cookie dough with sprinkles. The recipe calls for almond extract, but if you’re not a fan then just skip it.

If you decide to heat treat the flour, it will need time to cool. Place the flour in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30-second intervals. Stir the flour and continue microwaving until the flour reaches a temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit when you test it with a food thermometer. Let the flour cool completely before using.

To speed up the cooling process, you can place the flour in a thin layer on a parchment lined plate. Then when you’re ready to use the flour, use the parchment paper to lift and pour the flour into the bowl.

Add the softened butter, granulated sugar, and salt in the bowl of a stand mixer. It’s fine to use a hand mixer if you prefer. Cream the ingredients on low and then gradually increase the speed as the mixture comes together. Scrape down the sides of the bowl and add the milk, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl again, and then add the flour. If you have heat treated the flour, I recommend sifting it before adding. Mix again, and scrape down the bowl before adding the sprinkles and white chocolate chips. Mix one last time until thoroughly combined.
