Mosaic Sugar Cookie Hearts: Sweet, Colorful, and Fun
These sugar cookies hearts are more than just pretty. They are a tender sugar cookie that melts in your mouth, and the multi-colored mosaic design makes them a fun treat to make for any special occasion. They are especially good for Valentine’s Day, and birthday gifts for a loved one.
Tips for Making Sugar Cookie Hearts
Make sure you start with room temperature butter. Softened butter is easier to cream, and cold butter will make the dough harder to mix. I also like to use gel food coloring. The gel food coloring gives more vibrant colors, and it doesn’t mess-up the consistency of the dough.
Don’t overmix the dough. I say this all the time, but with cut-out sugar cookies it’s even more important. Mix the dough just until the dry ingredients are incorporated. And this leads me to my next tip.
Try to use as little flour as possible when rolling out the cookie dough. I know that this can be hard sometimes as the dough will stick to the rolling pin and work surface, but you’ll get tougher cookies if you use too much flour. This is why I like to roll-out the dough between sheets of parchment paper. And I actually like to do this before chilling the dough. I find it easier to roll out the dough when it’s soft. So I roll it out and then refrigerate it before baking.
When you’re ready to cut-out the sugar cookie hearts, work quickly so that the cookie dough doesn’t get too warm. If it does, put the cookies back in the refrigerator for 5-10 minutes before baking. Cold cookie dough helps the cookies maintain their shape while baking.
And my last tip…don’t overbake the cookies. Pull them out of the oven when the edges start to firm up, but before the cookies brown.
Step by Step Process With Pictures
Start by creaming together the butter, sugar, and vanilla extract. I like to use a mixer for this step so that the butter and sugar are thoroughly mixed. Add the egg and mix again.
Add the dry ingredients to the mixture and gently mix together by hand. I do not use the mixer for this step. Instead I like to use a spatula or spoon to mix-in the flour, baking powder, and salt. This way I don’t overmix the dough.
Remove half of the cookie dough. This will be the base color for the cookies. The remaining cookie dough will be colored. You can either separate the dough into two portions and color them separately. Or, add some food coloring to the entire portion and then separate the dough into two colored sections. Leave part of the colored cookie dough pink, and add more food coloring to the other portion to make it a deeper pink (or red) shade.
Wrap all three sections of the cookie dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate. If you decide to use my tip and partially roll-out the cookie dough ahead of time, place the cookie dough between parchment paper and gently roll out the dough. Be sure that you only partially roll-out the dough. You don’t want it to be thinner than half an inch at this point.
When you’re ready to make the cookies, pull the cookie dough from the refrigerator. If you haven’t pre-rolled the cookie dough, you may want to let the dough rest for a few minutes so that it’s easier to roll out.
Roll out each section of cookie dough. The pink and red sections will be cut out and layered on top of the base color, so roll them out a little thinner and leave the base color thicker. Cut out the colored dough in various heart sizes. That way you get a mosaic effect when you layer them on top of the base cookie dough.
Once you have the dough arranged the way you’d like it, gently roll out the dough so that it is a 1/4 of an inch in thickness throughout. Use a cookie cutter to cut-out the cookies and then place them on a parchment lined baking sheet. I used different heart sized cookie cutters to make these sugar cookie hearts, but you can use whatever shape you’d like.
Bake the cookies for about 8 minutes. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a couple of minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to finish cooling. Store these sugar cookie hearts in an airtight container. They’ll keep well for quite a few days, which is another reason why I like them.
I hope that you enjoy making these sugar cookie hearts. I think that they are such a fun cookie to make, and the pretty mosaic pattern makes them extra special. Use whatever cookie cutter shapes you have on hand to create your own multi-colored sugar cookies. The mosaic design adds a nice twist to a traditional sugar cookie, which makes them perfect for gifting. Pretty cookies that are great for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, or any time you just want to brighten up someone’s day!
