Delicious Valentine Whoopie Pies: A Sweet Love Treat
Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating people you love, and there’s nothing better than making a homemade dessert to say I Love You. The Valentine Whoopie Pies are the perfect treat to make as a sign of your love, or to celebrate the holiday with your family, friends, students, or co-workers.
Making Valentine Whoopie Pies
To make Valentine whoopie pies, you’ll need a whoopie pie pan. Or, a muffin pan. There are other ways to make the cake portion of the pies, but using one of these pans is the easiest.
This recipe makes a soft and fluffy whoopie pie that is more like a cake. Some whoopie pies are dense and tend to be drier (in my opinion), but these are so light.
The filling is an easy, vanilla flavored buttercream frosting. If you want a shortcut you can go with a store bought frosting. But for an extra special Valentine’s treat, I think making the whoopie pies from scratch is the way to go.
Steps for Success
You want a light and fluffy batter for these Valentine whoopie pies, so using a stand mixer or hand mixer is definitely helpful.
Step 1: Make the batter
Thoroughly cream all of the wet ingredients together. In a separate bowl mix together the dry ingredients. Because this recipe uses cake flour I don’t feel the need to sift the flour. However, mixing all of the dry ingredients together with a fork is a quick way to get a similar result. It mixes all of the ingredients, while aerating the flour, baking powder, and salt.
The process of mixing the batter is to alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the creamed butter mixture. Mix until combined, but don’t overmix. Add the batter to a greased whoopie pie pan and bake for about 12-15 minutes. The baking time will vary based upon the size of the whoopie pies, so keep an eye on them so that they don’t overbake.
Step 2: Make the Filling
These Valentine whoopie pies are filled with a vanilla buttercream. A creamy and delicious frosting that works perfectly sandwiched between the whoopie pie cakes. Make sure you start with softened butter and the filling will cream together nicely. Transfer the buttercream to a piping bag, but if you don’t have a piping bag you can also use a Ziploc bag. Cut a hole in the corner of the bag, and if desired add a tip to the bag before spooning in the frosting.
Step 3: Assemble the Whoopie Pies
You want whoopie pies where the tops and bottoms are evenly sized, so start by pairing up the cakes.
Then you can lay all of the little cakes out on parchment paper so that it’s easy to assemble the whoopie pies.
I like to have the flat side of the whoopie pies on the inside, so I’ll flip half of the cakes to be the bottoms.
Pipe some frosting onto each of the bottoms of the whoopie pies. You can add any type of sprinkles you’d like. Go with heart-shaped confetti, non-pareils, rainbow sprinkles, or any decoration you’d like. You can even add a layer of Valentine candies if you want extra crunch.
Once you have the filling piped onto half of the cakes, go ahead and add the tops to the whoopie pies. Another way to add extra sparkle is to roll the whoopie pies in colored sugar, or whatever decorations you’d like. This way the sides of the frosting will have extra decorations and be so pretty.
Valentine whoopie pies are a pretty and yummy treat to make for Valentine’s Day. These little cakes are light, fluffy, and the perfect bite to enjoy with someone you love. Make them for a Valentine’s Day party, or to share with someone special. These colorful and pretty desserts scream love!
