4th of July Fruit Kabobs: Easy Summer Dessert Idea

When you need a quick and easy summer dessert idea, these 4th of July fruit kabobs are the perfect treat to make. With their red, white, and blue colors, these dessert skewers look beautiful at a patriotic celebration.

About 4th of July Fruit Kabobs

One of my favorite things about these 4th of July fruit kabobs is that they are so easy to make. I like to use strawberries and blueberries for the red and blue components of the dessert, but you can substitute other fruits. You can also swap out the pound cake if you want to stick with fruit, but I think that the pound cake goes really well with the strawberries. It’s like strawberry shortcake on a stick.

Tips for Success

As I mentioned, these 4th of July dessert kabobs are super easy to make so I don’t have a lot of tips. However, my number one tip is to not make the skewers too far in advance. This way the pound cake won’t dry out on you and the strawberries won’t get too mushy and moist.

If you want to prep the day before a cookout, I suggest preparing each element separately. You can wash and cut the strawberries. Store them in the refrigerator in an airtight container. You can also cut-up the pound cake in advance if you’d like, but I recommend storing it at room temperature. Put the pieces in a Ziploc bag, or airtight container. Then the day of the party you can prepare the kebobs and put them in the refrigerator until needed.

Step by Step With Photos

These 4th of July Fruit Kabobs are so easy you probably don’t need a step-by-step guide, but I figure it can’t hurt to share. Start by washing the blueberries and strawberries and placing them on a paper towel to dry.

Cut the strawberries in half. I keep the green tops on the strawberries so that it gives guests something to hold onto when they eat the strawberries. However, if you want something that people can eat right off the skewer with their teeth, then by all means cut off the tops. Cut up the pound cake into 1-inch cubes.

Now that the strawberries, blueberries, and pound cake are prepared, you’re ready to start assembling the kabobs. Take a wooden skewer and thread the fruit and cake onto it. You can go in any order you like, but it looks pretty if you repeat the same pattern a second time. Repeat the process for the remaining skewers, placing them on parchment paper when completed.

Now you’re ready to add the white to your red, white, and blue patriotic dessert. Place the chocolate melting wafers, or chocolate chips, in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring in between each interval and continuing until chocolate is smooth. Drizzle the melted white chocolate on top of each dessert kabob. Then let them sit for 10 minutes so that the chocolate can set.

After the chocolate has set the 4th of July fruit kabobs are ready to serve. Or, place in the refrigerator until needed. I don’t like to leave them in the refrigerator for more than a couple of hours once I’ve added the white chocolate drizzle.

I hope you enjoy making these fourth of July dessert kabobs. It’s one of those desserts that is so easy to make, but it has such an impact on a BBQ table. It adds the perfect pop of color to your summer cookout, and the fruit is so refreshing on a hot day. Serve homemade ice cream on the side and you have an extra special summertime treat.
