Funny Leprechaun Cookies: Easy No Bake St Patricks Day Treat
When you want an easy treat for St. Patrick’s Day, these funny leprechaun cookies are sure to please. Mischievous leprechauns that will brighten up any dessert table. They come together with just a few ingredients, and are lots of fun to make with kids. Here’s a look at how to make them.
About Funny Leprechaun Cookies
What I love about these funny leprechaun cookies is that it’s really just a blueprint to give you an idea for making your own designs. I’ll show you the steps for how to create the leprechaun, but you can use your own artistic flair to make the design all your own.
You can also use any store-bought cookies you’d like as the base for these leprechaun cookies. You want something wide enough to give you enough surface area to work with, but you can really use any cookie you’d like. You can even use your own homemade cookies like a chocolate sugar cookie, or chocolate brownie as the base.
How to Dye Coconut Flakes
These funny leprechaun cookies use colored coconut flakes to make the beard for the leprechaun. You can also use orange colored sprinkles, or sugar if you want. The coconut flakes give a little more depth and texture to the beard. But if you aren’t a fan of coconut, substitute whatever orange colored decorations you’d like.
To dye the coconut flakes, place some shredded coconut in a Ziploc bag. Add several drops of orange food coloring and then massage the coconut flakes to distribute the color. Add more food coloring as needed.
This technique works better with a liquid food coloring instead of gel food coloring. If you use gel food coloring, mix the gel coloring with some water before mixing it with the coconut. Lay the colored coconut out on a paper towel, or parchment paper to dry. Once the dye has dried, you can chop up the coconut flakes into smaller pieces.
Step by Step With Photos
For these funny leprechaun cookies, start by placing 4 chocolate cookies on a plate or work surface. Melt 1/2 cup of white chocolate, or white candy melts in the microwave. Double check the instructions on the candy melts bag, but I usually start with 30 seconds and then continue in 30-second intervals until the chocolate is smooth.
Divide the melted white chocolate into 3 different bowls so that you can color them separately. Start by adding food coloring to one bowl to create an orange color. Alternatively, you can purchase orange colored candy melts. This way you don’t have to worry about dyeing the chocolate. Add green food coloring to the second bowl, and leave the third bowl white.
Transfer the orange to a piping bag, or Ziploc bag and snip a small hole in the corner. Draw a circle on top of the chocolate cookie. You want the circle to be in the middle of the cookie. Then draw a beard beneath the circle and fill it in with the orange colored chocolate. Before the chocolate sets, add some of the orange coconut flakes to create the hair for the beard. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes and then brush off any excess coconut flakes.
Add some melted white chocolate to the melted orange. Mix together to get a flesh, or peachy color. Place the peach colored chocolate in the middle of the orange circle to create the leprechaun face. Top with candy eyes, and a candy nose. You could also use mini M&Ms, sprinkles, or the melted white chocolate to make the eyes.
Now that the face is done, you can move onto making the leprechaun hat. Place the green colored white chocolate in a piping bag and draw a line along the top of the leprechaun head. Next draw a square on top of that to make a top hat. Or, a rounded hat if you prefer. Fill-in the hat with the green chocolate. You can decorate the hat however you’d like. One easy way is to just add some colorful sprinkles.
For the top hat design, use a piece of a black chewy candy like a black licorice string to create the trim at the brim of the hat. You can add sprinkles if you want, a gold star, or a shamrock. Decorate these funny leprechaun cookies however you’d like.
I hope you enjoy making these funny leprechaun cookies. You can make them as cute and silly as you’d like. I figure that leprechauns are known for being mischievous, so I like to give them faces to match that personality. These cookies are a fun treat to serve at any St. Patrick’s Day celebration. And because they are a no-bake dessert, they come together so quickly. Perfect for when you need a quick and easy treat.
