Ruler Rice Krispie Treats: Easy Recipe for Back to School
Turn a classic rice cereal treat into ruler Rice Krispie treats. An easy, and fun snack to make for back to school snacks. Or, to sell at a Fall bake sale. These chewy marshmallow desserts are so easy to make, and always a favorite with kids and adults alike.
About Ruler Rice Krispie Treats
There are two ways to make these ruler Rice Krispie treats. The quickest and easiest way to do it is to take store bought rice cereal treats and decorate them to look like rulers. This approach is great when you don’t want to mess with making the treats from scratch. Or, if you just want to make one or two rulers. But if you do want to make the Rice Krispie treats yourself, I’ve shared that recipe below.
Easy Method to Make Ruler Treats
Lets start by going with the easiest way to make these Rice Krispie rulers. Start with store bought Rice Krispie treats. The standard size is about 2.25″ by 1.75″. I think that this is the perfect size for a mini ruler, but you can shape it to be a little longer and thinner if you prefer. In addition to the rice cereal treats, the only other ingredient you need is black candy melt.
Lay the rice cereal treats on parchment paper. Then melt the candy melts in the microwave in 30 seconds intervals until the chocolate is smooth when stirred. Transfer the melted chocolate to a piping bag and snip the end to make a small opening. If you don’t have black candy melts, you could also use dark chocolate.
With the melted chocolate, draw the lines like you’d see on a real ruler. Make one taller line, then 3 smaller lines. Repeat the pattern to the other end of the ruler Rice Krispy treat.
And that’s all there is to it for making these cute ruler Rice Krispie treats using cereal treats that you can get from Amazon, or the grocery store. This is an inexpensive, and easy, way to make decorated Rice Krispie treats for a bake sale or school party.
If you purchased a box of 40 or 60 treats, the cost is usually about 30 cents per treat. Candy melts would be less than 10 cents to decorate these treats, so all total you’re talking about less than 50 cents to make each ruler. Sell it for $2 at a school bake sale and you’ve got a great profit margin.
How to Make Rice Krispie Treats from Scratch
Now if you’d like to make the rice cereal treats from scratch, it’s a super easy recipe. You can use mini marshmallows instead of the large marshmallows if you’d like, but the bigger marshmallows give you some bigger chunks of melted marshmallow which I think makes the treats extra gooey.
Step by Step With Photos
Line a 9โณx13โณ baking pan with parchment paper, or aluminum foil. Let some excess hang over the sides so that itโs easy to remove the rice crispy treats from the pan. I also like to start by getting theย 6 cups Rice Krispie cerealย measured in a bowl and set aside until needed.
Add 5 Tablespoons butter to a large saucepan. Heat over medium heat until melted. Add 10 ounces of marshmallow to the pan and stir to combine. If you’d like a flavor boost, once the marshmallows are melted add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Remove the pan from the heat and immediately add 6 cups rice cereal to the melted butter and marshmallow mixture. Stir until combined and then transfer the mixture to the prepared baking pan. Gently press the mixture into the pan so that it’s evenly distributed.
Let the Rice Krispie mixture cool. Once cool, or when you’re ready to decorate, use the excess parchment paper to lift the mixture out of the pan. Place on a cutting board and cut the treats into long strips.
You should be able to cut 5 long strips per pan of treats . Then you can cut each strip into 5 smaller sections. This will yield ruler treats that are approximately 1.8″ tall by 2.5 inches long. You can adjust the cuts if you prefer smaller, or larger, sized treats.
Then follow the steps above to decorate the treats to look like rulers. Let the chocolate set before placing them in an airtight container. Or, wrapping them to sell at a bake sale. These ruler Rice Krispie treats will remain fresh for at least a week when stored in an airtight container.
Whether you choose to make the rice cereal treats from scratch, or use premade treats, I hope you enjoy transforming a standard rice cereal treat into a cute back to school snack. It’s amazing how just a little bit of chocolate can dress-up a snack and make it a little extra special.
