They are made with a boxed cake mix and topped with gummy worms. It is a super easy dessert to throw together, and the cake pops give off that classic, playful “mud pie” vibe.
About Dirt Cake Pops
Dirt cake is one of those desserts that kids always love. I mean, what kid doesn’t love playing in the dirt, right? Dirt cake is designed to bring that fun activity to the dinner table by letting kids “play” in the dirt with their dessert. So these dirt cake pops take that popular dessert but put it into a handheld version that’s perfect for picnics, parties, or school events. It’s easy to make, and each bite is packed with flavor.
A Look at The Ingredients
Using a boxed cake mix is the key to keeping these dirt cake pops super easy to make. Yes, you can opt for making a cake from scratch if you want. But the beauty of this recipe is that it lets you put together a polished dessert that looks like it took more time and effort than it really did. So keep it simple and let a cake mix be your friend for this recipe.
My family likes the combination of a vanilla cake and frosting for the cake pop, combined with semisweet chocolate and Oreos on the outside. I know that a more traditional dirt cake would use chocolate cake because you want it to look like dirt. But since these pops are covered in chocolate and has the dirt cake aesthetic on the outside, I think you can go with whatever flavors you like on the inside.
Tips for Success
Once you’ve baked the cake, it needs to cool completely before mixing with the frosting. This is key because it prevents the frosting from melting into the cake and giving you a gooey mess. I’ll even bake the cake one day and then make the pops the next day. For me this makes it so easy to assemble the pops on the day that I need them.
I recommend using a cookie scoop to scoop out the cake mixture to form into balls. This ensures that you get dirt cake pops that are all the same size. A #40 cookie scoop is good for 2 tablespoons and a #20 cookie scoop is good if you want bigger cake pops with 3 tablespoons of cake mix. If you don’t have a cookie scoop, you can also use a kitchen scale to make sure that you get equally portioned dirt cake balls.
When you add the gummy worms, don’t just shove them inโpress lightly so they stick without tearing the pop apart. It keeps everything intact and gives that perfect “worm crawling through dirt” effect. Make sure to add the gummy worms before the chocolate hardens.
Step by Step With Photos
Make the cake according to the directions on the box. Because you don’t need to worry about it looking pretty, you can bake it in whatever baking pan you’d like. Let the cake cool completely, and then crumble it into a large bowl. Add 1 1/4 cups frosting to the bowl, and mix together with the cake until you get a dough-like consistency.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Use a cookie scoop to scoop out 2 tablespoons, or 3 tablespoons of cake mix. Roll the balls to smooth them out and then place each cake ball on the baking sheet.
Melt a small amount of chocolate in a microwave safe bowl for 30 seconds. Dip a lollipop stick into the melted chocolate and then insert the stick into the cake ball. Repeat the process for all of the cake pops, then place the tray into the freezer for 15 minutes. If you don’t have space in your freezer, then you can refrigerator them instead. Just chill them for at least 30 minutes.
Now you need to crush Oreos, or any chocolate sandwich cookie, to make 1 cup cookie crumbs. A good rule of thumb is to use 1 Oreo cookie for each dirt cake pop. So if you made 12 pops, then crush up 12 Oreos. If you made 16 pops, then use 16 Oreos. You don’t want fine crumbs so skip the boxed cookie crumbs that you can buy at the store. Instead, make your own crumbs by placing the Oreos in a Ziploc bag and crushing with a rolling pin. You want a mix of crumbs and some larger chunks as well.
Melt the remaining chocolate in 30 second intervals until smooth when stirred. Dip a cake pop into the melted chocolate. Shake off any excess chocolate and then dip the chocolate covered cake pop into the cookie crumbs. Place the cake pop back on the parchment-lined baking sheet and immediately top with a gummy worm. Repeat the process to coat all of the cake pops in chocolate. Let the cake pops rest until the chocolate hardens, then you can dig-in and enjoy your dirt cake pops!
I hope you enjoy making these dirt cake pops. Grab your mixing bowl, get messy, and enjoy some fun making these pops. You won’t regret it. And this is definitely a great dessert to make with kids. Let them enjoy the process and the sweet reward of biting into a pop that they decorated themselves.
